Susan G. Komen San Antonio to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness month
Susan G. Komen was founded by Nancy Brinker, who promised her sister, Suzy Komen, that she would end the disease that claimed Suzy’s life. Komen San Antonio started in 1997 by a group of local survivors, and has invested more than $18.2 million for local uninsured and under-insured patients who need access to breast cancer healthcare.
Lisa Kerkez is Breast Cancer Survivor.
"The day after her 48th birthday, Lisa Kerkez decided to do a self-breast examination in the shower. She felt something that wasn’t there before and decided to get checked out. She was diagnosed with breast cancer on October 28, 2013. There is no history of breast cancer in her family. Since her breast cancer journey, she has had a total of 8 surgeries. Komen assisted her with co-pays and medicine after her Breast Cancer Diagnosis, after being terminated from her job by certified mail the day of my biopsy. In Sept, 2016, she reached out to Komen, once again for financial assistance. She did not qualify for disability, nor any other government program. Komen provided her family with Christmas dinner, H-E-B gift card for groceries and gifts for her 13 year old son."
The 2nd Annual Ignite the Night is on September 30th, 2017.
