UT Health San Antonio: Military Caregiving Telehealth Initiative

UT Health is seeking military caregivers to whom therapists will offer free mental health counseling.

Dr. Velligan is a professor of psychiatry and director of UT Health’s Military Caregiving Telehealth Initiative. This is a free, 12-week counseling program for caregivers of military veterans. The counseling is available for caregivers throughout the state of Texas.

"Caregivers in military families face many challenges to their physical and mental health as they care for a military member with a variety of health issues, from loss of limb to PTSD and traumatic head injury. The caregiver may be a young spouse with children, who has suddenly become the family’s sole breadwinner, to older parents caring for their incapacitated adult daughter or son. A national report shows that depression in military caregivers may up to four times higher in the U.S. adult population."
