Local woman fights for bill to make some mammograms more affordable for women
SAN ANTONIO - A local woman will make a very important trip to Austin on Tuesday to push for a change in state law when it comes to costly diagnostic mammograms.
Lisa Kerkez is a breast cancer survivor. She will be at the state Capitol to testify in support of House Bill 195.
The proposed legislation would eliminate the gap that exists between health insurance coverage for screenings, compared to the more costly diagnostic mammorgrams.
Diagnostic mammograms are typically more expensive because additional X-rays are needed to see the breast from several angles.
If a woman is unable to afford the out-of-pocket costs, they might delay or forgo follow-up screenings, which could lead to a late diagnosis.
Local State Rep. Diego Bernal authored the bill. You can read the full text here.
