Noisy hand dryers may be spreading more bacteria when you use them

Those noisy restroom hand dryers meant to dry your hands after washing may not be leaving them as clean as you would hope.

That's because researchers have found the dryers are blowing bacteria through the air and landing onto the people using the facilities; bacteria that may be originating from flushing commodes.

The new research, conducted by scientists at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, found evidence the dryers are creating powerful jet streams of bacteria once they turn on, but little bacteria was found inside the dryers, leading them to believe the bacteria was already in the air from toilets being flushed.

The same research found less bacteria was spread when the dryers were turned off.
