Man jumps off bridge to his death, causes accident on Loop 1604
SAN ANTONIO —
UPDATE 4pm: The Eastbound lanes of Loop 1604 are now open. San Antonio Police anticipate westbound lanes to open soon.
San Antonio police are responding to a motor vehicle accident Thursday afternoon caused by a man running through traffic and ended with him jumping to his death on the North Side.
Officials are closing the east and westbound lanes of 1604 near Blanco Road for an accident involving three cars that occurred around 2 p.m. Thursday.
Police spokesman Doug Greene said vehicles were veering out of traffic to avoid hitting a man in his 30's attempting to cross the westbound lane of Loop 1604. A jeep careened into another lane and collided with two other cars traveling on the eastbound lane causing an accident, Greene said. One person sustained a bloody nose in the accident, but no people needed transportation to the hospital.
Witnesses said the man reached the access road of Blanco Road and jumped off the bridge. Emergency crews tried to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Greene said the man did not get struck by a vehicle as he sustained injuries from the fall.
The westbound and eastbound lanes of 1604 will be closed during the investigation.
"This is gonna be shutdown for quite a bit," Greene said. "We'll try to open the scene as soon as we can."
