Cases of domestic violence increase in Bexar County
They are staggering numbers of cases of violence against women, men and children. In Texas, last year there were 196, 564 cases of family violence, a .9% increase over 2015. Bexar County is 16, 639 of those cases and District Attorney Nico Lahood says that number is also on the rise. "Since 2015 with this administration, convictions for felony domestic violence cases have almost doubled.
Lahood says the increase is in part because more people are reporting the violence, and also because his office is going after abusers. But he adds that there’s a deeper reason for the higher numbers. "We’re morally bankrupt in society. That’s a fact. If you hung out with me for a month, you probably wouldn’t sleep for a month. we see evil. We see people who have a demented world view."
Lahood adds these cases will continue to be a priority in his office. "We’re not trying to prosecute people to prosecute them. These are people that are chronic abusers. These are people who have not changed their world view. They don’t respect women… do not respect children and they need to be held accountable."
