Convicted sex offender on the run after caught with drugs in SW Austin
Authorities are searching for a convicted sex offender who is on the run after being caught with drugs in Southwest Austin.
Kevin Waddell's sex offender registry indicated that he had been living in Travis County after more than two decades in prison.
He was initially convicted for sexual assault and after serving his sentence, he moved to Central Texas.
"He came back to Austin, he complied with his parole officer, he complied with sex offender registration requirements," said U.S. Deputy Marshal Brandon Filla.
But in 2015 he was involved in a crash in Southwest Austin. When police arrived they found Waddell and another man.
"They try working with them both, but the males become combative, also verbal combative so they were arrested for public intoxication," Filla said.
Police found a small Ziploc bag with money on Waddell, and evidence of drugs.
"They found a white powdery substance which was believed to be cocaine," Filla said.
But before results on the drug test came back, Waddell was released and he disappeared.
Despite not knowing where he is, the U.S. Marshals believe he's still in Austin
"I think what he had here in Austin, readily available, is what is still available for him today," Filla said.
Waddell is a welder by trade, and might be driving a 2008 silver Kia.
He faces charges for not complying with sex offender registration, possession of cocaine and parole violations.
"It was this incident that he had in South Austin, where he was arrested for public intoxication, is what led him down a slippery slope," Filla said.
