DPS releases name of man involved in high speed chase

Gilbert Hernandez Casares

BEXAR COUNTY- After a wild 40 minute police chase Wednesday morning. It spanned from along Highway 16 in Atascosa county and ended in Bexar County, near loop 410 and Ray Ellison

"All you heard was the helicopters coming out, you saw different constables, sheriff's, troopers coming out,” said Eddie Benavides who witnessed the chase.

This man is 33-year-old Gilbert Hernandez Casares, who DPS says was running through the neighborhood. They say they tried to pull him over on a routine traffic stop in Atascosa county.

But, he started what turned out to be a 40-minute chase - with several law enforcement agencies behind him.

"He was going really fast, like when he turned the corner on Ray Ellison Drive, like I really thought he was going to flip over,” said Emily who witnessed the case.

"Right away I was like locking all my doors, locking all my windows, making sure, you never know what those guys they come in and get people hostage and stuff like that, that was my concern because I got kids in here,” said Benavides.

Eventually Casares came out of this brush line and they grabbed him.

"He has several felony warrants that he had outstanding, a weapon located inside the vehicle, narcotics located inside the vehicle and the vehicle was stolen as well,” said Lieutenant Jason Reyes with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Casares was taken to University Hospital for treatment. He is facing charges of evading arrest, theft of a motor vehicle, theft of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance.
