East side store owner working to make community safer: 'I'm trying my best'
SAN ANTONIO —
An East side store owner is speaking out after crime in the area put his store on the city's radar. Convenience Corner Neighborhood Store has been serving the East Side community for more than a decade.
The store sits on the corner of Lavender Lane and South W W White Road.
“Anytime my wife wants something to drink or whatever I stop in and see him,” said Mr. Brown, a longtime customer.
Recently, the store has been surrounded by criminal activity. Back in December, a triple shooting in the store's parking lot left one man dead. Neighbors say they are tired of the crime.
“Problems at the store, the kids can get caught up in the mix,” said Ronald McGarity, a neighbor.
Police and the city have talked to the store's owner.
“It’s going to be up to the owner. If the owner can meet us half way and make efforts to try and make their property safer,” said Officer Doug Greene with the San Antonio Police Department.
The owner says he's doing whatever he can to stop crime from happening around his property
“Everything the city said, I did, I cleaned everything,” said store owner Asm Farhad.
He still fears his store will be shut down.
“We don't want them to be closed and they won't be closed forever, but we do want the activities happening around them to change,” said District 2 Councilman Alan Warrick.
Customers say they want the area to improve.
“That his business stays open and that he can serve this public, that he can serve this community,” said Mr. Brown.
For now, the owner is cleaning up his store. He’s hoping the changes make a difference.
“I’m trying my best,” said Farhad.
