Excessive speed blamed for deadly pickup truck accident
SAN ANTONIO – The driver of a pickup truck died after smashing into a telephone pole at 12:30 am Sunday.
Police tell us the driver was traveling eastbound on Cypress towards McCullough Avenue just north of Downtown when he took the curve too fast, lost control and hit a telephone pole. He was trapped inside the truck for about 45 minutes before the fire department could cut him out.
Initially, the driver was stable and talking, but by the time rescuers cut the roof off the pickup to pull him out, the driver passed away.
A female passenger was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.
