Family of murdered 24-year-old father holding prayer vigil
A candlelight vigil to honor Mario Martinez and other San Antonio victims who lost their life to gun violence is being held on Friday.
The 24-year-old father's body was found inside of an apartment at Astoria Apartment Homes located in the 9300 block of Perrin Beitel Road in December of 2017. The gruesome discovery came weeks after his family reported him missing.
"It's hard. He was literally the rock to this whole family," says Claya McHenry, Martinez's girlfriend.
He had been shot multiple times. An ongoing investigation led officers to 47-year-old Reid Shizuo Kamitono. It's believed Kamitono aided in trying to hide Martinez's body. Police are still searching for his killer.
The gathering is open to the public. It's taking place at 7 p.m. outside of Xclusive Lifestyles at 713 Seguin Rd. in Converse. T-shirts honoring Martinez will be sold at the vigil. For more information on the event, click here.
McHenry says it's a time for unity. She's hoping the vigil will help the family find some answers or hope for justice.
"Just to support everything that has happened over the last few years with Mario and including every body else in the city that lost their lives to gun violence so a time for everybody to come out and gather and show their respects," said McHenry.
