Local Muslim organization hosting voter registration drives
SAN ANTONIO -- A local Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization is hoping to engage more people this upcoming election.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations -- or CAIR San Antonio -- is hosting two voter registration drives this weekend at area mosques.
This isn't the first time the organization has put on a voter registration drive.
They most recently held one before the presidential election in November, saying civic responsibility is critical at all times and especially now given the current political climate.
“We are seeing what is going on with our political process,” said local chapter president Sarwat Husain. “It's important for all of us to be aware of our responsibilities and, you know, be responsible for what's going on because in the end no one needs to be blamed except for us.”
The organization says there are about 30,000 Muslims living in Bexar County; however, the voter registration drives are open to everyone.
The first is on March 17 at 1:15 pm at MCECC, 5281 Casa Bella San Antonio, TX 78249.
The second is on March 18 at 1:30 pm at Mustafa Grocers, 4081 Medical Dr. San Antonio, TX 78229.
