Man found dead in parking lot was victim of hit-and-run crash, say detectives
SAN ANTONIO - Police are investigating an apparent hit-and-run accident that left a man dead on Friday morning.
"Anytime we have anybody's death that involves a lot of unknown circumstances or possibly suspicious, we always carry it as a homicide so for right now, that's the classification until we can determine if this was one, a traffic incident or two, something more sinister," said SAPD public information officer, Carlos Ortiz.
According to the San Antonio Police Department, police were called to check out a report a man lying in the parking lot of a convenience store at New Laredo Highway and Southwest Military Drive shortly after 3 a.m.
When they arrived, they found the body of 43-year-old Matiaas Benavidez. He appeared to have a large injury to his head, and his shoes were found near the street.
Coworkers say Benavidez worked at Tex Mart Auto Shop, just a few feet from where he was found.
Investigators believe Benavidez was hit by a car that did not stop. His girlfriend told officers he liked to go for walks at night. His death remains under investigation.
