Mom confirms body found in car trunk is missing son
UPDATE: Family confirmed Thursday that the body found in the trunk is that of 23-year-old Martin Gonzalez, as family initially suspected.
UNIVERSAL CITY, Texas - Police are investigating a body found in the trunk of a car in Universal City on Tuesday.
Officers were called to an apartment complex on Dukeway Drive, near Loop 1604 and Kitty Hawk, just before 10 a.m.
The landlord called police about a very foul smell coming from a gray Pontiac Grand Prix. When the trunk of the car was opened, a body wrapped in a tarp was found inside.
"It's early on in the investigation," said Steve Mihalski of the Universal City Police Department. "But at this point, that's one of the avenues that we're looking at is that the crime scene was somewhere else and the vehicle was just used to transport, but we haven't confirmed that yet..."
Investigators do not know how long the car had been there.
Carmen Vidales says the car belongs to her son, 23-year-old Martin Gonzales, who has been missing since January 29th.
"We got a call today at 1:00 pm that they had found his car," said Vidales.
For more than a week, Vidales and her family have been searching for her son and his car.
"And I appreciate everybody's prayers, searching, and everything."
On Friday, Gonzales' wife, Brittany, said her husband gave a man a ride, but where they were going was still a mystery.
Gonzales said her husband had an uneasy feeling.
"Right before my husband left, he called his brother and said if you do not hear back from me in an hour, then something's not right.."
Vidales believes the search for her son may be over. "They said more than likely it's him," she went on to say.
The Universal City Police Department said it was not known whether the body is that of a man or a woman. They said they would know more on Wednesday, when an autopsy is performed.
