Part of Woodlawn to get memorial designation in honor of late Archbishop Flores
SAN ANTONIO - City council members approved a plan to add a memorial designation to a portion of West Woodlawn Avenue honoring the late Archbishop Patrick Flores.
The stretch of Woodlawn getting the designation, between North Zarzamora and Bandera Road, includes the home campus of the Archdiocese.
Nine ground-mounted signs will be installed along Woodlawn that read, 'Archbishop Patrick Flores Memorial Way.' The project will cost about $4,400.
Archbishop Flores passed away in January, but was widely known for his work in the South Texas region and as the first Mexican-American to be named a Catholic bishop (1970).
In 1979, he was elevated to Archbishop of San Antonio; a position he held for 25 years until his retirement in 2005.
The request to rename the roadway was first made by District 7 Councilman Chris Medina.
