San Antonio woman helps premature babies through breast milk donation

A San Antonio mother has now donated over 3,000 ounces of breast milk to help premature newborns.

A San Antonio mother has now donated over 3,000 ounces of breast milk to help premature newborns.

Alathia Castillo has hyper-lactation that causes her to overproduce breast milk. She's using her condition as a gift to help others.

Her own personal story encouraged her to keep giving. When her second son was 5-weeks-old, he developed a respiratory illness. He was treated in the PICU. It was during that time, Castillo saw first hand the great need for her breast milk.

"I was thinking like wow, I'm helping these moms that are in here," said Castillo.

This week she has shipped out 1,600 ounces to Prolacta Bioscience, a company that products human-milk fortifiers for premature babies in the NICU.

"It just like all aligned and then when my son got sick and I got to see that, the premature babies and how sick they are and how many months that they can be in the NICU, that was an eyeopener," Castillo said.
