SAN ANTONIO (KABB) - Police are looking for the person who shot and killed a 3-year-old boy on the Southwest Side.

“Instead of planning my son's birthday, I have to plan his funeral,” says Rene Blancas.

Just two days from his son Rene Regino Blancas Jr.’s 4th birthday, the local father is now grieving and holding his son’s picture tight in his arms.

“He was my family. He was my strength, “ said Blancas.

On Saturday night, the father said they were driving on Briggs at New Laredo Highway when a bullet hit their son from another car.

“They pulled past us, all of a sudden the vehicle turned around behind us, as seen in the rearview mirror. I hear a loud pop, my wife asked me if I ran over anything, I said no and then and she told me to check on the children,” added Blancas.

Blancas Jr. was sitting in the back seat, next to his 1-year-old sister.

“There a hole in the back of his head. The first thing I thought about was rushing to the hospital I was right down the road from,” said Blancas.

A stuffed animal and some flowers now surround a pole on Briggs, and a motive for the shooting remains unknown.

“I have no enemies. I'm just a hardworking man, I’m not gang affiliated. We (don’t) do no drugs. I'm the only man working in my family. I work almost 80 hours a week,” explained Blancas.

His family now is now praying, holding hands, and remembering their little Blancas Jr. and his love for chickens and baseball.

“He had a whole bunch of chickens with his grandfather. You would see him and you would just fall in love him. My boy touched so many hearts. Let me find justice for my son,” added Blancas.

San Antonio Police Department detectives are looking for a gold or beige four-door 2000 Honda Civic.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 224-STOP.

A candlelight vigil for Blancas Jr. will be held on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. on Field # 1 at the San Antonio Five Diamonds Park located at 8214 S. Flores St.

Funeral services begin on Thursday.
