A deputy was seriously injured when he was hit by an SUV while monitoring traffic in South Bexar County.

The accident happened around 7:45 a.m. Thursday on the 12,000 block of Highway 281 South near Mission Grande. Officials say the deputy, who was on a motorcycle, was running radar checks on the 12,000 block of Highway 281 South near Mission Grande around 7:45 a.m. Thursday, when a woman driving an SUV apparently lost control and hit him.

Deputy Art Garcia was transported by EMS to San Antonio Military Medical Center with a broken leg. As of Friday morning, he remained in stable condition.

The woman driving the SUV was not injured. Investigators are now checking to see if she was on her cell phone at the time of the accident. The woman claims she was rear-ended by another vehicle, but investigators have not found any evidence to support her claim. She has been taken in for further questioning.
