A former Tuskegee Airman from the San Antonio area was laid to rest Friday morning at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Sgt. Major Thomas Ellis grew up in San Antonio and one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen remaining in San Antonio. Ellis' daughter, Janice Stallings, said her father died of a stroke in the hospital almost two weeks ago.

She said her father was kind-hearted, a proud military veteran and a humanitarian.

"He was my dad so it was an honor just to be his daughter, but I didn't equate it with being a Tuskegee Airman. I just equate with him being my dad. He was a wonderful dad," said Stallings.

Ellis was 97 years old.
