SAN ANTONIO - Three military veterans were simultaneously honored and laid to rest on Wednesday morning at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. They are known as unaccompanied veterans who died with no surviving family members.

Retired Marines George Peel, Roberto Martinez and Army veteran Rick Pincus all passed away last month. They would have been buried in a pauper's grave had it not been for a local funeral home that sought to give the men a proper burial.

Dozens of local volunteers attended the somber funeral to honor the men for their service. Local funeral homes picked up the costs of the services.

"I think it is awesome that so many people take time out of their day to come and pay their respects," said Knowles Atchison, an Army veteran. "I've seen more people a homeless veteran's funeral than some people have at their own family funeral. And that says volumes about the city of San Antonio."
