What's next for South San school closures
SAN ANTONIO —
South San Independent School District made the decision to close three campuses; Athens Elementary, Kazen Middle School and the Alternative Program campus.
Superintendent Dr. Abelardo Saavedra said this is due to a direct result of under enrollment.
"In the last couple of years we have actually been dropping. Two percent last year, two percent this year and we anticipate we will drop even more this coming year,” said Saavedra.
He said many families are moving out of the neighborhoods in the district limits, so they’re having to come up with new ideas to attract parents.
"We’re trying to move away from just traditional schools - more towards magnets, move towards specialty schools, move towards stem schools,” said Saavedra. “There are all sorts of options."
Saavedra said by giving parents options and having more specialty schools, he believes parents will move back into these neighborhoods.
