SAN ANTONIO - A 4-year-old girl is fighting for her life after she was shot in the torso on the city's West Side early Tuesday morning.

According to officers, the child was at a home with her father when she apparently found a gun under a couch cushion and shot herself. She suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. The man then grabbed his daughter and went to a relative's home nearby to call for help.

He initially told investigators he and the child were walking in the 500 block of Park Grove when someone drove by and opened fire on them, but he later reportedly admitted the child found the gun while he was in the kitchen.

Paramedics rushed the little girl to University Hospital where she underwent surgery. She was last reported to be in critical condition.

Investigators believe the father gave the gun to a friend to get rid of it. The father, identified Lazarus Anthony Gutierrez, 24, has since been charged with felon in possession of a firearm and tampering with evidence.
