Merriam-Webster adds 2,000 words

Merriam-Webster announced Wednesday 2,000 new additions to its unabridged dictionary.

It was someone's job to uncover the first known use of the term "wacky tobacky." Now, their work is published in the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary.

The circa-1976 term is among some 2,000 new entries the company announced Wednesday.

In a blog post, editors say the latest additions provide a snapshot of various influences on the English language, including science, technology and fashion.

Here are a few of the new entries:

athleisure n : casual clothing designed to be worn both for exercising and for general use

nomophobia n : fear of being without access to a working cell phone

waggle dance n : a series of figure-eight movements performed by a bee to indicate the direction and abundance of a distant food source

urban fantasy n : a genre of imaginative fiction featuring supernatural characters or elements in an urban setting

FOMO n : informal: fear of missing out : for of not being included in something (such as an interesting or enjoyable activity) that others are experiencing.

Possible Use: Upon reading this story, I shared a link with friends to prevent a case of FOMO.
