Is this new app setting up kids for child predators? 7 On Your Side investigates (ABC7)

FAIRFAX, Va. (WJLA) - It calls itself the coolest social network and game for kids.

The Movie Star Planet app is rated family friendly for four-year-olds and up, but it's being investigated for its part in X-rated crimes.

According to court documents, predators are befriending young girls in chatrooms on the app, asking them for their cellphone numbers, then texting them and asking them to send nude photographs and videos of themselves performing sexual acts — and the victims do exactly what they're asked.

"The Internet has created a lot of risk that we didn't have to worry about," said parent Katie Thompson.

"It's getting crazy out there so parents need to be alert of what they get the kid," said parent Daniela Rojas.

The Fairfax County Police agree.

"We want to remind our kids don't give out your home address, your home phone number, don't send a photo of your house or even indicate where you are," said Fairfax County Police Officer Tara Gerhard.

Even in online video games, chatrooms are an easy way for criminals to target innocent children.

"If somebody ever asks your child to send an inappropriate photo that should be a red flag, to one not send it and two be comfortable enough to talk about it," said Gerhard.
