A look at the Spurs week ahead: Rockets, Magic, Pelicans & Wolves
The San Antonio Spurs are currently on a two-game losing streak and find themselves 7th in the Western Conference playoff race.
As they gear up for another week, this might be their most important week yet this season.
The Western Conference has eight teams fighting for a spot to get into the playoffs. The Spurs are in the mix and are fighting for their playoff lives.
Let’s take a closer look at the week ahead for the Spurs.
Spurs vs Houston Rockets:
The Spurs are traveling to Houston to face off against James Harden and the Houston Rockets on Monday. The Rockets lead the season series against the Spurs 2-0.
Going into this game, the Spurs are not looking likely to pick up the win. Although they played the Golden State Warriors well last week, the Rockets are on another level right now.
In order to stand a chance at winning this game, the Spurs need everyone to step up and play well. We have seen LaMarcus Aldridge play well all season, but in their last game against the Oklahoma City Thunder he was nonexistent.
If the Spurs aren’t able to play great defense, then this Rockets team is going to put points on the board quickly. And with the offensive power we have seen from the Spurs this season, they won’t be able to keep up with the Rockets’ scoring.
With that said, the number one key to victory for the Spurs is to contain the Rockets on the offensive end as best as they can.
Spurs vs Orlando Magic:
In the second game of this week's back-to-back, the Spurs will host the Orlando Magic on Tuesday.
This is a must win for the Spurs as the Magic have not proven to be much of a threat as of late.
The Magic have given the Spurs trouble this season. The last time the two matched up, the Spurs were handed a blowout loss in Orlando with a score of 87-114.
Since then, the Magic have struggled to do anything well. With that being said, the Spurs don’t have to do much to pick up the win.
If they are able to show up, play their game and put the ball in the basket then they shouldn’t have any trouble winning this game.
Spurs vs New Orleans Pelicans:
On Thursday the Spurs host the New Orleans Pelicans for their third game of the week.
This is an interesting one for a few reasons. The first reason being that we might see the return of Kawhi Leonard. And the second being that they Spurs and Pelicans are just a few games apart in the West standings.
If the Spurs are able to see Leonard return, then they have a great chance at winning this game. The last time the two faced off it came down to the wire as the Pelicans picked up the win with a score of 116-121.
Aldridge needs to have a better showing than this last time they faced off. The five time All-Star only posted 8 points in 13 minutes. Which was the the first time he wasn’t able to post double digit points up to that point on the season.
If Leonard returns, Aldridge plays well and their defense is precise then the Spurs should be able to pick up the win and help secure their spot in this year’s playoffs.
Spurs vs Minnesota Timberwolves:
On Saturday, the Spurs play in their third home game in a row as they host the Minnesota Timberwolves.
This is another important game as the Wolves are one of the other teams figuring for their spot in the playoffs.
The last time the two teams played, the Spurs lost the game 86-98. What’s interesting about this loss is that Aldridge had another unimpressive game.
The Spurs have to have Aldridge playing well if they want to secure the win. We are still unsure on whether or not Leonard will be playing so the Spurs can’t rely on him.
Aldridge needs to be able to have a huge game if the Spurs want a chance at winning.
The Wolves will be without Jimmy Butler as he recovers from a minor meniscus tear. With that said, they will be without one of their best players.
This is another must win for the Spurs, and if they can pick up this win along with a few others this week then they should be in good shape to make this year’s playoffs.
