Dwight Howard says he is a Hall of Famer

Dwight Howard of the Atlanta Hawks says he is a Hall of Famer.

Yeah, I know.

We know, winning NBA championships is not a requirement of being nominated or even inducted into the Hall of Fame, We're looking at you Charles Barkley.

Howard, who is in his 12th season in the NBA and first with the Hawks, has never won an NBA title but does have some accolades to back his claim of being inducted in the basketball hall of fame.

Though his dominance came when he played his first eight seasons with the Orlando Magic, Howard still has been named to the All-Star Team and All-NBA (8x), All-Defensive (5x), 2004-05 All-Rookie and a 3-time defensive player of the year, where he feels it has never been done.

Via SlamOnline:

“If you look at basketball itself, and I don’t ever talk about myself, but winning three Defensive Player of the Year trophies has never been done. Leading the league in rebounding six straight years. All that kind of stuff, I think that deserves it.”

You can sit and dissect Howard’s game and what he needs to work on. After leaving Orlando to join the Los Angeles Lakers, for one season, to joining forces with James Harden in Houston, where we all know how that ended, to now his time in Atlanta, Howard to me may one day be there but right now, if his career were to end, I don’t think he would get a ballot.

He talks about the media scrutiny in which he got while in Orlando. Well that was self inflicted. Let’s take a moment and look at recently retired Spur Tim Duncan. Now I can sit here and break down all the accolades in which he achieved over his 20 year career but there is no need.

He is a first ballot Hall of Famer.

And he never came out and said that he would be. Duncan let his play do all the talking for him. Heck, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili will too see themselves there but they do not draw attention to themselves, Howard does.

That could be his downfall. Stats and individual awards don’t lie. I am not taking anything away from Howard at all. But to come out and say you are a Hall of Famer, and feel that your resume “no doubt” gets you there, that is a little self absorbed.

Stop talking, and let your play do it for you. Take note of Duncan’s career. That is a Hall of Famer.
