SAN ANTONIO - Local high school training programs are busy doing what they can to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
"If anybody is impacted, you know each campus will contact the parents and the student athletes,” said NISD Executive Athletic Director Stan Laing.
It’s the reality coaches, trainers and student-athletes are facing that the COVID-19 pandemic is not done.
"The UIL and the TAPPS organizations have come up with a great protocol-- a great plan,” said Antonian Head Football Coach Danny Padron.
The plan allows summer workout to continue with a few rules. Among them, surfaces must be disinfected, there’s to be no sharing of food, water, clothing or towels. They must also use masks and social distance as well as having hand sanitizer of hand-washing stations. There are several additional requirements, which can be found on the UIL’s website.
Laing said at NISD, they are following all the rules and taking precautions.
"Based on the questioning we have in pre-screening and self-monitoring based on how they answered those questions, they're having to get checked and tested and so we're in that process at a number of our high schools,” said Laing.
If a student or staff member at the summer training tests positive Padron said everyone at the camps who came in contact with that person will be banned from workouts for two weeks, which is in accordance with the requirements set in place.
"If one of the guys tests positive than that whole group is gone. But if he's also been part of another group than that group is also gone. So, that's why we keep them separate. Hopefully, we don't have that happen to us,” said Padron.
A COVID-19 case has been confirmed at Smithson Valley High School’s summer workouts. They said the following about the situation:
Good afternoon Ranger students and families,
I am writing to notify you that we were notified that a student who attended strength and conditioning camp last week has tested positive for Covid-19. The student was last at camp on Tuesday June 9th. The student started to experience Covid-19 related symptoms on Tuesday evening and did not return to camp, at which time the family decided to have their child tested. While at camp, the student did not experience any symptoms. The student completed a health screener, had temperature checked, and abided by all social distancing and hygiene related safety measures while at camp, so we believe that spread has been mitigated at this time.
However, in accordance with state guidelines, and out of an abundance of caution, the entire student group and coach to which this student was part of will self-isolate and not return to camp until health guidelines required by UIL and the state are met. This includes no fever for at least three days, improvement in symptoms, and at least ten days since symptoms first appeared. Once met, all students in the group will be able to return to camp. These families will be contacted directly by campus training staff to discuss criteria and when they can return to camp. Our district custodial team will also conduct a deep clean of the facilities that the student accessed as an extra precautionary measure prior to students returning tomorrow.
As a reminder, please continue to complete the health screener prior to attending camp each day, encourage your children to follow all safety guidelines in places while at camp, and have them stay home if they or anyone in the household is experiencing potential symptoms of Covid-19. If you have questions about potential symptoms, please consult your physician.
A COVID-19 case has been confirmed at Johnson High School’s summer workouts. They said the following about the situation:
Dear Parents & Guardians,
We have learned that one of our students attending the Johnson strength camp has tested positive for COVID-19. If your son is participating in the Football 10th-12th Running Back group, we are asking that he stay home for the next 14 days. All other camp groups may continue to participate in the camp.
We were informed that the student is believed to have contracted the virus over the weekend, but didn’t know and attended the camp on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
We are sorry for this inconvenience. Please monitor your son during this self-quarantine time. If no symptoms show up, they may return to participate July 1st.
A COVID-19 case has been confirmed at Somerset ISD’s summer workouts. They said the following about the situation on Facebook:
PARENTS: We want to inform the community that the district discovered on Tuesday that a Somerset ISD staff member working with our Athletics Summer Conditioning program has tested positive for COVID-19.
As a result, every parent of students who interacted with this staff member has been contacted. Those students in that specific workout group are unable to attend any district function for the next 14 days as they self-monitor their condition.
All other unaffected Summer Workout groups will continue as scheduled at this time, while still following the safety guidelines established by the State of Texas.
Our goal, as always, is the safety of our students and staff, as well as passing along pertinent information to our Bulldog Nation family.
Harlandale ISD has also voluntarily suspended their summer workouts out of an abundance of caution. In the letter they sent to parents and guardians they did not mention any confirmed COVID-19 cases in student-athletes, coaches or trainers.
Burbank High School also voluntarily stopped their workouts until June 22 due to a coach and a student-athlete both being exposed to the virus separately outside of the workouts. The coach tested negative and the student was never at the workouts after being exposed.
Laing said right now NISD is taking their summer workouts day by day.
"As a parent we've got to monitor first and foremost the safety of our children and try to use some common sense but with the understanding there's nothing foolproof and just trying to use the best common sense and safety precautions we possibly could do,” said Laing.
