Breakthrough treatment welcomed by patient who lost ear to skin cancer
SAN ANTONIO - George Dodds has been fighting Melanoma Cancer since 1962. He’s had six surgeries, lost his ear to Melanoma and the cancer has kept spreading. Most recently its been discovered in his lungs.
Dodds said, “We've got a new medicine we're going to try."
Doctors gave Dodds a new type of treatment. A immune therapy called lpilimumab.
Dr. Anthony Tolcher said, "These drugs work by turning your immune system on so they go after the cancer." Dr. Anthony Tolcher runs Next Oncology.
This treatment is so effective the FDA calls it a medical breakthrough.
"This is a fascinating turn in cancer treatment because for the first time we can reliably cause the immune system to attack and reject a cancer." Dr. Anthony said.
Each scan recently has shown that Dodd’s lungs are improving. At the age 87 he’s beating the odds. But this hasn’t taken his fun in the Sun.
