78-year-old man hit, killed by car while trying to cross the street

A 78-year-old man died after he was hit by one vehicle and then run over by a second on the South Side Tuesday night.

Police say the victim was walking across the 6400 block of S. Zarzamora shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday, when he was hit by a 2010 Ford Focus traveling in the northbound lanes. The driver told police she did not see the man in the roadway. The driver immediately pulled over into the parking lot of a nearby business and called 911 to report the accident.

The impact caused the victim to roll into the northbound lanes. A witness who was traveling south made a U-turn and attempted to get the attention of other drivers by honking her horn. When she moved her vehicle into the center turn lane, the driver of a dark SUV traveling behind her ran over the victim. The driver of the dark SUV did not stop.

The victim did not survive and was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m.

Police are still trying to positively identify the victim and notify his next of kin. They are also searching for the driver of the dark SUV, who will be charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid.

Officers said the man was attempting to cross the street. No further details have been released at this time.
