U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a previously deported sex offender Tuesday.

Agents from the Eagle Pass Station arrested 42-year-old Mexican national Miguel Diaz-Cardoso Sept. 11 near Quemado for illegally entering the country.

Agents discovered Diaz-Cardoso had a 2016 conviction in Montgomery County, North Carolina for a sexual offense involving a minor and he was removed from the U.S. on two different times.

“Apprehensions like this highlight our border security efforts and the threats we face along the border,” Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Felix Chavez said. “Our agents remain vigilant and alert to protect our communities against dangerous individuals.”

Diaz-Cardoso faces a charge of illegal reentry after removal, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
