SAN ANTONIO — More than 600 children in four counties need volunteers to get to know their families, speak up for them in court and advocate for their best interest.
Each volunteer is assigned with a child who has been removed from their home as a result of abuse or neglect and placed into the state’s care.
Last week, CASA of Central Texas had its largest swearing-in of court appointed advocates with 16 trainees who represented Caldwell, Comal, Guadalupe and Hays counties.
CASA aims to reach half the children in state care who do not have an advocate by their side.
To join the change CASA is doing, each volunteer must complete five weeks of training, a courtroom observation and a background check.
Free training courses are available throughout the year.
