SAN ANTONIO - Officers say 17 people, including ten children, safely escaped a fire at a West Side duplex early Thursday morning.
Flames broke out shortly before 5 a.m. at the two story duplex located at West Travis and Nueces Streets, west of Downtown.
A woman who lives at the home says the fire started where a radio was plugged into a wall. She tried to put the fire out with a blanket, but the fire continued to spread across the second floor of the building.
Everyone inside the house got out. The woman who initially tried to put out the fire suffered burns to her hands, but was reported to be okay. No one else was seriously hurt.
Fire crews said there were no working smoke detectors in the duplex, which was built in 1910.
