An animal rescue group is spreading the word about a gentle dog who was apparently shot, leaving a gaping hole in his head.

Hercules was surrendered to San Antonio's Animal Care Services and is now being cared for by the Animal Defense League of Texas.

The 7-year-old Mastiff mix has a large hole below his left eye, which goes all the way through his palate.

The hole causes food to get stuck in Hercules' sinus cavity, which can cause long-term health problems.

The veterinarian treating him says the hole appears to be consistent with a gunshot wound, although it's unknown how the injury happened. Hercules needs specialized surgery to close the hole and reconstruct the bone under his eye.

The Animal Defense League is hoping to raise $3,400 to cover the cost of the surgery. If you would like to help, click here.
