George Strait to receive 2018 'Texan of the Year' award Thursday

1952: Country music singer George Strait, who has scored more than 40 No. 1 hits on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, is born in Poteet, Texas. One of the best-selling artist of all time, some of his hits include "Fool Hearted Memory," "Amarillo by Morning," "All My Ex's Live in Texas," "Love Without End, Amen," "I Cross My Heart," "Check Yes or No" and "Write This Down."

The "King of Country Music" will be in New Braunfels on Friday to receive the 2018 "Texan of the Year" award.

George Strait will receive the award at the New Braunfels Civic/Convention Center. The award is given by the Texas Legislative Conference, the well-known annual statewide forum that is marking its 52nd year next March.

Strait is joining an array of prominent past honorees, including Presidents, U.S. Senators, Congressmen, Governors, and business icons.

"No one has done more than George Strait to raise awareness and funds for the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts," said Conference Chair and former Texas State Representative Doug Miller. "He put his well-earned reputation on the line and asked not only his fellow Texans to step up, but all Americans. And they have."

To date, Strait's efforts on behalf of Hurricane Harvey victims have raised over $50 million.

Strait's career spans more than 30 years and includes more than 60 No. 1 singles, more than any other artist in any genre. He is the only act to have a Top 10 hit every year for over three decades.

Strait was also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006 and has 33 platinum or multi-platinum-selling albums, more than any other country artist. He has sold over 70 million albums and earned more than 60 major entertainment awards.
