SAN ANTONIO -- A man who risked his life during a 2-alarm fire to save his pets is fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit.

Tai Bannister was recovering at University Hospital on Tuesday morning, following Monday night's fire at the Ashler Oaks Apartments on Parkdale Drive.

Bannister fell from a second story balcony while trying to save his dogs. He was one of two people hurt in the fire. An unidentified woman was killed.

One of Bannister's dogs, Jax, went missing after the fire, but was later found on Tuesday.

“Tai’s first reaction was to go back inside and get the dogs, and when he went back he wasn’t able to go through the door anymore so he had to go through the balcony,” said Maria Northcutt, a relative of Bannister.

Meanwhile, other apartment residents said they received notices on their doors about a week ago about a problem with gas lines at the complex.

The notice urged tenants to call building maintenance if they smelled gas. It was unclear whether the gas issue was related to Monday's fire.

The San Antonio Fire Department confirmed the complex did not have any fire violations on record. Their investigation into the cause of the fire continued into Tuesday afternoon.
