Moving family's trailer, belongings stolen during stop in San Antonio
A family moving from Tennessee to California stopped in San Antonio to get help and had their trailer, with everything they own, stolen.
"We had our most valued possessions in there. It was everything that we would bring to start a new life," said Elliot Perkins who was traveling with his wife and 18-month-old son.
The wheel on the trailer was badly damaged and getting hard to pull so the family pulled over on I-10 near Roland Road. They were forced to unhitch the trailer while they quickly went to get a new hub not far from their location.
"We figured it's only going to be a minute or two and like the wheels broken, you can't take this anywhere," said Perkins.
In less than 20 minutes, the trailer was gone.
"We get back and we're like where's the trailer? It had been like 20 minutes. It was such a short amount of time. It was mind blowing," said Perkins.
The couple had recently put thousands of dollars into repairing the vintage trailer. They said it represented a new beginning.
"Just the fact that there's people who would take someone's brand new life and literally hurl it in down the side of the road and leave it for dead," said Perkins.
On Wednesday, the trailer was located at an impound lot. It was trashed, damaged and robbed.
"It's going to take a lot more to recover from the emotional stuff than it is to get the stuff that we lost back," said Perkins.
The family's two cats are still missing.
