New IKEA store set to provide about 250 jobs starting February

LIVE OAK - Preparations are underway to finish the first IKEA Furniture Store in the San Antonio area.

“It’s really starting to come to life, and feel like an IKEA Store,” said Diedre Goodchild, the location’s store manager.

The new location, near Interstate 35 and Loop 1604, is scheduled to open on February 13th.

Many people on social media have expressed excitement towards the store’s opening.

“It’ll definitely be good for businesses around here,” said one shopper nearby.

However, some are worried the large store could cause traffic problems.

“There will probably be a lot more traffic,” said Daniel Farias, a Live Oak resident. “A lot more congestion. Traffic in this area is generally pretty bad as of late. I think it’s going to add to an already pretty bad problem.”

On Wednesday we met with Live Oak City Manager Scott Wayman.

“There have been concerns about traffic,” said Wayman.

Wayman tells us that the Texas Department of Transportation has already made changes to roads near IKEA. Their goal is to help traffic move along.

“They’ve widened the roadway to provide a dedicated lane,” said Wayman. “They did some enhancements to that traffic signal. 1604 also has an access to the back of this for IKEA.”

The new IKEA store will provide roughly 250 full time jobs to the area.

The store manager at the Live Oak IKEA says she doesn’t think traffic, caused by the furniture store, will be an issue.

“We’re working really close with the local police departments,” said Goodchild. I’m not worried about traffic. I think that the team that we pulled together, to take care of those things, they’re exerts. I trust they’re doing what’s best for the community.”

Thousands of shoppers are expected for the store’s opening day on February 13th. Goodchild says shuttle buses will be used for people having to park at offsite locations.
