New program helps find homes for unwanted pets

There's a new program starting in San Antonio that aims to save unwanted pets without ever having to take them to a shelter.

The Petco Foundation is teaming up with Adopt-a-Pet.com to start "Rehome" -- a program that helps finds homes for pets online.

If a family faces the decision to give up their pet, they can put them up for adoption on the website for free.

“There's significant challenges for the animal welfare community with a lot of pets coming into the shelters and the shelters struggling to keep up,” said Susan Cosby with the Petco Foundation. “So we're hoping if people can take advantage of this service it will free up the shelters for the animals who need them the most.”

The program launches Tuesday, April 4.
