Northwest Side neighbors set to clean up illegal dump site
SAN ANTONIO - Neighbors are working together to end illegal dumping in a northwest side neighborhood.
District 6 Councilman Greg Brockhouse is hosting a neighborhood cleanup this weekend. Citywide volunteers are welcome.
"You've got paper you've got diapers," Stallings said.
Nestled in a wooded area near Culebra and Old Grissom Roads is what's left of an illegal dump site.
For years acres of land have been used by people from all over the city to get rid of unwanted junk.
"There was mattresses at one time, tires, anything you can think of," neighbor Connie Stallings said.
"Neighbors were probably cleaning their yard and instead of just like what I'm trying to do but basically instead of taking it to a landfill they chose to back up against all this area here and just dump it," said Director of Constituent Services Raul Zamora.
"They don't want to pay the fee to go to the landfill I guess," Stallings said. "I don't know why if we could figure that out it would be awesome."
Weeks ago the City of San Antonio brought in heavy machinery to remove large items.
Saturday, March 3rd city-wide volunteers will team up with District 6 Councilman Greg Brockhouse to finish the job.
"This is our backyard whether we live immediately one block from here or one mile from here this still our backyard," Zamora said.
"That is why I do what I do is because I want my neighborhood clean," Stallings said.
Illegal dumping is a citywide problem.
Northwest side neighbors hope to set an example for other communities by doing something about it.
"Because if you're not going to be part of the solution you're part of the problem," Stallings said.
Fines for illegal dumping are $300, $500, and $1,000.
The clean-up is set for 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Click here if you'd like to volunteer. If possible, volunteers are asked to bring shovels, rakes, and wheel barrows.
Volunteers are asked to enter the parking lot of Advanced Auto Parts at Culebra and Old Grissom Road.
Look to the right of the building and follow the dirt road. DO NOT park in the Advanced Auto Zone lot.
