HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Tower of the Americas turns 50!
SAN ANTONIO - 2018 is a big year for San Antonio. It's also a big year for many of the places that the city is best known for, like the Tower of the Americas, which is 50 this year.
In this week's "Our City, Our History" Robert Price gives you a look at the history behind the tower.
The Tower of the Americas officially opened to the public in 1968 during Hemisfair '68. It was built as the fair's so-called "theme structure".
"One of the great things about the tower is that it required a lot of creativity to build it, and there was an invention called slip form which allowed this to be built quickly under a very short time frame,” said Andres Andujas, CEO of Hemisfair
Construction began in 1966 and was completed in the summer of 1968.
Now, 50 years later, the Tower of the Americas remains a San Antonio favorite for natives and tourists alike. You can get a view of the city from the observation deck, get some gourmet food at the chart house restaurant or even check out the 4D theater ride.
