A couple’s dispute that led to the wife being beaten by her husband was sparked by her use of Facebook, Las Cruces police said.

Police investigators said the woman was attacked by her husband, Jose C. Melendez, after he discovered that she had used her cellphone to access Facebook.

On Tuesday, officers went to the 2200 block of Dona Ana Road after receiving a domestic disturbance call, police said.

When they arrived, the woman had injuries to her hands, arms, torso and face. Her injuries were non-life-threatening and she was taken a hospital, police said.

Melendez is accused to choking his wife until she lost consciousness. He is also accused of striking his wife multiple times, and biting her hands and arms when she tried to defend herself. Melendez appeared to have scratch marks consistent with his wife’s statements that she was trying to defend herself.

Melendez was arrested and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is initially being held without bond.
