Prosecution in Uresti federal fraud trial to call final witness Tuesday

Prosecutors in the state senator Carlos Uresti trial are expected to call their final witness Tuesday.

SAN ANTONIO - Testimony is starting to wind down in the fraud trial of state Sen Carlos Uresti.

The cross examination of key witness Denise Cantu wrapped up late Monday afternoon.

Cantu was excused from the witness stand a little after 4 pm. Last week the defense attorneys began trying to point out that Cantu's claims and her testimony aren't lining up.

That theme continued Monday.

Cantu testified last week she had a sexual relationship with state Sen. Carlos Uresti saying it started with a comment Uresti made to her in an elevator while Cantu was at his office in San Antonio for a deposition.

Cantu was originally a legal client of Uresti’s. He got her a big settlement in the wrongful death lawsuit of her two children who were killed in a car crash in 2010.

Cantu says she had an intimate relationship with Uresti, and considered him a trusted friend and financial advisor.

Defense attorney Michael McCrum questioned that alleged relationship by using documents stating that deposition actually happened in a one-story office in Brownsville.

When the defense asked if she could remember the specifics Cantu couldn't recall.

Uresti's wife was in the gallery Monday for Cantu's testimony.

Prosecutors are expected to call their final witness Tuesday.
