A San Antonio family is grieving tonight, preparing to bury 3-year old Rene Blancas, Junior. The boy would have turned 4-years old today, but instead of celebrating his birthday, his mother, Melanie Santos says they are planning his funeral. “We shouldn’t have to be planning a funeral. We should be planning his birthday going picking out a cake, picking out stuff, not going to a funeral home”

The boy was killed riding in the back of his family car Saturday night, after someone opened fire near Briggs and New Laredo Highway. Rene’s dad, Rene Blancas, Senior says they aren’t involved in drugs or gangs and are just a normal family. “I can’t even imagine why someone would want to do this to us, let alone kill my baby boy.”

Tonight they are remembering Rene as a happy little boy who loved, baseball, dancing and laughing. Santos says, “I don’t know what he had. He had like magic in his heart everybody fell in love with him instantly.”

There is a candlelight vigil for Rene tonight at the ballpark where he played tee-ball. There is a memorial service on Thursday from 6-9 PM at The Promised Land Church off Southeast Loop 410. Rene’s family says the shooter was in a gold or beige Honda but police have made no arrests. “I mean they can catch whoever did it and he can get what he deserves, but that’s never going to bring my baby back,” said Santos. Blancas adds, ”We need to find whoever did this to my son, cause I don’t want it to happen to anybody else no other family deserves this.”
