SAN ANTONIO - A new research study is aimed at better understanding how COVID-19 impacts the heart.
It’s a project called, “Understanding and Prevention of COVID-19-Induced Cardiomyopathy.”
UT Health San Antonio researchers are planning to follow recovered patients over a period of time to find out if patients experience cardiovascular problems.
Dr. Allen Anderson with UT Health San Antonio, said the goal is to try to identify patients who have had some sort of cardiac involvement with the COVID-19 infection.
The project is one of nine COVID-19 research initiatives that is being funded by UT Health San Antonio.
“One of the things we are very interested in trying to figure out if having a COVID infection in any way, puts people at risk in the future for problems that we might not intuitively thought they would have,” explained Dr. Anderson.
According to Dr. Anderson, this study will help researchers understand why 20% of COVID-19 patients experience cardiac involvement and 80% of patients do not.
Dr. Madesh Muniswamy, Ph.D is the project leader and Dr. Anderson is also part of the team.
The study is in the beginning phases. Patient data will start getting collected in the next 4 to 8 weeks.
