COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) - The Diocese of Covington says they self-evacuated Wednesday afternoon after reportedly receiving suspicious packages.

The packages were delivered to the diocese's offices on Madison Avenue, just across the street from the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, late Wednesday afternoon.

A sergeant with the Covington Police Department says the diocese was not expecting these packages and that they came from a local delivery service with no return addresses. The diocese chose to evacuate out of an abundance of caution and call police around 4:30 p.m.

Police arrived and blocked the street and the Cincinnati Fire Department's bomb squad was called in. The bomb squad used a mobile X-ray to examine the packages and determined they were not dangerous. Police said one package was ordered by a diocesan official, but the others' origin and intent are not known.

The packages were taken to be investigated by the FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Police wouldn't say what was inside those packages. The scene was cleared just after 6:30 p.m.

The diocese came under fire in the wake of a viral video this weekend that showed Covington Catholic High School students in a confrontation with a Native American protester, Nathan Phillips, in Washington D.C. Several longer videos were released Sunday that showed more of what led up to that confrontation.

The student at the center of the first viral video, Nick Sandmann, says he didn't disrespect Phillips, but the school still remains in the national spotlight amid a fury of criticism and social media outrage.

Several of the students say they have received death threats since the videos came out. This caused the school to close Tuesday, but it reopened Wednesday.
