COLUMBUS, Ms. (WSET) -- A Pitt Bull rescue in Columbus, Mississippi, was contacted on February 12 with pictures of a severely abused dog chained to a pole.
The Shaw Pitt Bull Rescue was already at capacity when they received the call, but after seeing pictures, they made space.
The rescue called the owner and learned the horrific detail of the dogs life. He was named 'Bad Dog' and had spent the last five years chained to a put in a pud pit.
The owner told them he hadn't taken the dog to see a vet in years and he lived in solitude.
The Shaw Pit Bull Rescue posted the incident on their Facebook page, detailing their conversation with the owner.
"Is he good with animals," the rescue asked?
"He's never been around them," answered the owner.
"Is he good with children," the rescue asked?
"He isn't allowed near them," the owner answered.
The rescue took in 'Bad Dog' and gave him the name Phoenix, quoting the following on their Facebook page:
They may defeat you, burn you, insult you, injure you, and abandon you. BUT they will not, shall not, and cannot destroy you. For you, like Rome, were built on ashes, and you - like a Phoenix - know how to resurrect.
After a checkup, they determined Phoenix should weigh between 55 and 60 pounds, but is seriously underweight at only 38 pounds.
He had sores all over his body from enduring rain and weather with no shelter.
The Shaw Pit Bull Rescue has been posting his slow progress, and on February 15, he greeted them at the gate to the kennel with a small tail wag.
The rescue is continuing to raise money for Phoenix's care. If you would like to donate, you can visit their website here.
