FARGO North Dakota - Chris Perry never dreamed he would be celebrating his 40th birthday alongside his new baby girl and boy and his wife Heather never thought the babies she was carrying and scheduled to be born in May would enter the world in a crazy, unpredictable way.
Heather was working in February when her water broke 25 weeks early. She was hospitalized and later gave birth to daughter Olive nine weeks early.
"It was scary for sure because she came very quickly," Heather Perry told WDAY. "They said, 'You can push.' I asked, 'Are you ready?' Three pushes and she was out."
She came so quickly that her husband, Chris, missed it.
The doctors and nurses also waited for baby Ashton to arrive but that wouldn't happen for five days.
On March 1, Ashton was born, meaning he and his twin sister will celebrate their birthdays on different days and different months.
"I went to Google and found out what the world record time was for longest split twin birth, which was 87 days and I said, let's go for the record," Chris said.
At one point, Heather went into the NICU to hold Olive while still carrying the other twin, Ashton.
"I held her and every time I would he would kick in my stomach. He knew she was up there but he was enjoying his extra space to sprawl out," Heather said.
Soon Olive and Ashton will leave the NICU after a dramatic entry into the world once and meet their big sister, Fiona, who already shared the story of her new siblings with their UPS delivery driver.
"It's going to be a good story to tell at school and everyone they meet they can tell that story to," Chris said.
A discharge date for the newborns has not been set and depends on how quickly the two gain the weight they need.
