After three years on the run for a fatal drunk-driving accident, Juan Mendoza is back behind bars. He was arrested on the pedestrian bridge in Laredo on Jan.19.

Fox San Antonio sources say he had been regularly going back and forth across the border and had also cut off his ankle monitor.

According to Bexar County Deputy Chief Ari Jimenez, who retired from Homeland Security Investigations, Customs and Border Protection, officers must have seen something odd and decided to check Mendoza as he tried to cross through the U.S. citizen line.

He skipped town in 2014 after he was charged with felony murder. He had given Jennifer Medrano a ride home from the El Fuerte Night Club. SAPD documents state Mendoza was drunk and had cocaine in his system when he ran a red light on Old Highway 90 and 36th Street. He crashed into a pickup truck.

"My sister rolled over 3 times and she came out of the window. She was the passenger and she wasn't wearing her seatbelt," said Medrano's sister, Carolina.

Medrano recovered from her injuries, but the driver from the pickup was killed.

Mendoza had two prior DWI convictions.

He was extradited to Bexar County on Monday.

Mendoza sits in the Bexar County Jail without bond.

Mendoza will be in court on January 26.
