Our City Our History: Incarnate Word

It's a local university that's nearly 140 years old.

In this week's, "Our City, Our History" we introduce you to the University of the Incarnate Word.

The sisters of charity of the Incarnate Word first came to San Antonio in 1869, just a few years after the end of the civil war. In 1881 the sisters founded Incarnate Word College. It was originally established as a place for young women to receive higher education. Male students were first admitted to the college's undergraduate programs in 1970.

A lot has changed since then. The name transformed to the Incarnate Word in 1996. UIW welcomed its first football team in 2009.

Over the past 32 years the university has been known for its "light the way" festival. Light the Way runs nightly through Jan. 6.
