Genuinely strange reasons people got into car accidents

Sometimes driving can feel like a cat and mouse game.

Car accidents are usually nothing to joke about. But sometimes, certain situations arise where you can’t help but laugh.

Below, a compilation of five true car accidents that will either make you chuckle or stare at the screen in disbelief. And don’t worry, none of the people involved were seriously injured—so you have permission to giggle.

Yabba dabba disaster. A man from suburban Detroit channeled his inner Fred Flintstone when he tried using his feet as brakes. According to a Fox News story, the 24-year-old man noticed his car brakes were failing and continued to drive—with his feet outside the car door, trying to slow the car down. Surprisingly, it worked, and he came to a complete stop at least twice during his travels, say witnesses. Not surprisingly, the tactic didn’t work for long. The man was finally unable to stop at a red light, and he struck two vehicles. He then proceeded to keep driving and hit two more cars. The man passed all sobriety tests and was arrested for driving with a suspended license and for reckless driving.

The DMV wait just got longer. A 46-year-old woman with her learner’s permit crashed into the Waterbury Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) while taking her driving test. Officials from the DMV told NBC Connecticut that the woman backed into a parking spot and sped up instead of braking, therefore crashing through the windows of the building. The driver and DMV instructor were not injured. And while the results of her test were not released, it’s safe to assume the driver didn’t pass.

Don’t tell mom. What started out as a joy ride turned into a midnight flop. A 14-year-old boy from St. Louis took the keys to his mother’s brand-new Chevrolet Equinox and picked up three of his friends for a late-night ride around town. The teen noticed a police officer and panicked, losing control of the vehicle and hitting a tree, reports Fox 2 Now. Luckily, nobody but the tree was hurt.

“Extra cheese, please.” An elderly man’s Honda Fit was the perfect fit for the entrance to a Valentino’s pizza joint in Lincoln, Neb. He drove his car right through the front door, and it got stuck. The Lincoln Journal Star said that crews treated the driver at the scene and took him to a local hospital. The man must have been hungry—he ordered his pizza while trapped in the driver’s seat. Unfortunately, the Lincoln Fire and Rescue Chief reported that the patient did not get his pizza before going to the hospital.

An apple a day does not keep the doctor away. But a car crash could save your life. A 56-year-old Pennsylvania man was eating an apple while driving a semi through Berks County when he started choking on the piece of fruit. According to the Bucks County Courier Times, he lost consciousness and slumped onto the steering wheel, causing the truck to smash into a concrete barrier. The crash caused a Heimlich maneuver-like effect and dislodged the piece of apple from the driver’s throat, saving his life.
